Brendan Fraser peaked in Hollywood. Why it took him so long to come back

Audiences have seen a number of major developments in the entertainment industry over the past year. But the one that has arguably filled many fans with the most joy is the return of Brendan Fraser. The beloved actor has returned to the limelight with a bang, and people have since referred to this resurgence as “Brennaisance.” Fraser is a star who has truly hit his stride in Hollywood and, before all the recent buzz, it’s been a while since fans have seen him appear in regular film and TV productions. Some may be wondering why it took so long for his big comeback to happen, and one of the actor’s former collaborators has weighed in on the matter.

At his peak, Brendan Fraser was a strong box office draw, having cemented his cinematic dominance with the loved one Mummy franchise, George of the Jungle and more. Most would agree that he was hugely successful in the 90s and early 2000s. And Bill Condon, who helmed Fraser in gods and monstersbelieves that the star’s various accomplishments during this time are part of why he’s been away from the company for so long:

Brendan’s had a good long run, but anyone who has that kind of pop success or fame, it’s almost like the audience loves him, loves him, and then gets sated. Then they kind of force you back in a different form, which Brendan did. And only then are they ready to open up to you.

One can understand the logic conveyed by Bill Condon by addressing Variety. When you’re a major player known for delivering specific types of work, it can get a little tiring and cause some artists to walk away and take time to reinvent themselves accordingly. The Encino Man star certainly did it here. However, many would say there was another factor at play when it came to his absence.

In 2018, Brendan Fraser accused the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Philip Berk for groping him at lunch in 2003. Berk admitted pinching Fraser’s butt once and claimed he thought it was a joke. After the actor went public with the allegation, some came to believe he was blacklisted for discussing it. However, in a 2019 interview with Swing in the morningFraser himself denied this idea.

Regardless of the real reasons for his absence, I think most of us can agree that it’s just great to see Brendan Fraser thriving once again. He recently promoted his new movie, The whalefor which it is already won a grand prize in the middle of the Brenaissance. So far, the film has garnered acclaim and its lead actor has won critical acclaim for his role as Charlie, a 600-pound inmate who seeks to reconnect with his daughter. Some even say that Fraser is the clear favorite for Best Actor at the Oscars.

After his turn in Darren Aronofsky’s latest production, the main man appear in Martin Scorsese The Moonflower Slayers and the comedy to come Brothers. He also has ongoing TV gigs in Doom Patrol and new CW show Professionals. The man certainly remains reserved and busy, and he has certainly earned this wonderful comeback.

You can watch Brendan Fraser in The whale when it premieres in theaters on December 9 as part of the program of upcoming movies.
