Depression: This mood-boosting hobby can help fight bouts of sadness

New Delhi: Depression is an epidemic these days with many people struggling with the crisis, regardless of age. From children to young adults to older adults, many are struggling with a mental health issue that is often stigmatized and talked about in whispers. When it comes to depression, people have their own ways of dealing with the disease. Some rely on stress-related eating while others choose workouts or meditation, medication or therapy to combat depression – but a study recently found a free way to improve mental health which does not cost a penny.

Visits to the psychiatrist and pills can also put a dent in your pocket. But the only free way to fight depression that experts recently discovered and found effective for people was bird watching.

How does birdwatching improve mental health?

Just seeing or hearing childbirth can lift your spirits for up to eight hours, according to a new study in the journal Scientific Report. The results are relevant evidence of how getting closer to nature or exploring the countryside and interacting with wildlife can eliminate the risk of depression.

Ryan Hammoud, a researcher at King’s College London, said it was the first time an association between hearing and seeing birds and positive mood had been noticed. Experts hope this will demonstrate the need to protect and provide healthy environments for tenders.

For the study, experts collected data from 1,300 people over three and a half years and participants filled out questionnaires to get answers. People who could see or hear birds at the time or had done so in the last few hours seemed 70% happier than others. Mood improvement was seen even in people with a clinical diagnosis of depression.

“Daily encounters with birds have been associated with lasting improvements in mental well-being,” Hammoud added in the journal Scientific Report.

What are the symptoms of depression?

According to the Mayo Clinic, depression can only occur once in a lifetime. However, some people may have multiple episodes. Symptoms of depression include:
