About the Redding Rodeo
In 1943, Redding Rodeo was a small one-day event started by a young man accompanied by Sheriff John Balma. At the first rodeo in 1943, the purse was $175 plus all entry fees! The Saturday night dance at the time was from “9 a.m. until milking time!”. It wasn’t until 1948 that the event moved to Redding and entered into a 99-year lease with the town of Redding for their event. In the 1980s the Redding Rodeo Association was born when the Sheriff’s Posse remained under the purview of the Sheriff’s Office, the infamous Redding Red Shirts were born.
Another big rodeo partner is the Asphalt Cowboys, founded by local businessmen in 1954. Their annual barbecue takes place in September and features one of the biggest pancake breakfasts in the country on the Friday morning of the rodeo to help de many people in our community. . Another thing to watch out for this year is the annual Redding Rodeo Parade, which takes place on Rodeo Saturday, it will be fun for the whole family!

Of course, what would rodeo be without all the affiliated rodeo clubs? Redding’s Rodeo Association Auxiliaries have been rodeo’s unswerving helpers since its inception. The Redding Women’s Rodeo Association (originally the Posse-ettes) has always helped with the rodeo, helping with concessions and tickets. We can’t forget the future of Redding Rodeo, the Redding Junior Rodeo Association, they are excellent at stepping in where needed. Finally, Redding’s Queen program is one of the best in the country! These are the ladies who represent Redding Rodeo across the country, not only to attend their hometown event, but also to travel to rodeos all over the country! Without all the volunteer groups, Redding Rodeo would not be the community success and tradition it has become.

Asphalt Cowboy Pancake Breakfast | May 20, 2022 | 5:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. | Redding Town Center
The pancake breakfast started in 1954, as one of the rodeo week activities. The first breakfast served about 700 people. By the late 1950s, the breakfast had over 1,000 attendees. The Cowboys used material borrowed from many different sources, including the sheriff’s department, local churches, and some Redding residents. Breakfast lovers often ate their pancakes and sausages on tables made of doors and trestles “borrowed” from the area’s lumberyards.
Over the years, the Cowboys found it necessary to acquire more and more of their own equipment, as breakfast had exceeded the supply of donated equipment. From tables, the Cowboys launched a program to buy or build equipment. The Cowboys were able to purchase the old McDonald’s grills as they were phased out of Northern California restaurants. Those hot plates and many chairs and tables later, the undisputed largest outdoor community breakfast in the United States has grown to over 10,000 of our best friends sharing breakfast together, rain or shine. let it sell!!!

The parade began life with nearly 200 entries. Over the years, the parade has grown to 250 entries, coming from all over the northern state. The original parade had 32 categories. Today’s participants compete in 52 different classes with prizes and trophies. Rodeo parades, a regular feature of Western rodeos, featured many of the professional cowboys who participated in the rodeo, along with the typical mix of marching bands, floats, and cheerleaders. Redding’s first rodeo parade upheld these traditions, including having a western rodeo, movie, or other star as the grand marshal of the parade.
